My family has been connected to Patek Philippe for over 25 years. During this time we have built our relationship with the brand through one trusted retailer and have always believed in the values Patek Philippe publicly represents: tradition, respect, and watches meant to accompany families across generations. Unfortunately, our experience at the Patek Philippe boutique operated by Gassan Amsterdam was the complete opposite of those values. Recently I visited the boutique with my 22-year-old daughter, who has just moved to Amsterdam. She works, earns her own money, and wanted to begin her own relationship with the brand in the city where she now lives. We were not asking for a Nautilus, Aquanaut, or any highly allocated piece. We simply asked whether she could start with a ladies’ watch from the Luce collection, a classic and modest first step for someone who genuinely admires the brand. During our first visit we were told she could not even be considered because she did not yet have a Dutch insurance number and was in moving procedure. Fair enough, she had only recently moved, so we returned later once everything was properly arranged. During the second visit we spoke with a more senior sales representative. The response we received was honestly astonishing. We were told she could not be put on any list. When I asked how a young client should begin a relationship with the brand, we were told that the Luce is not a beginner watch. When I then asked what would be considered an appropriate starting watch, the answer was simply: “I cannot tell you.” This was not a polite refusal due to availability. It was a completely closed door without explanation, guidance, or the slightest willingness to welcome a new generation of clients. For my daughter, who had already needed courage to walk into the boutique and ask such a question, this was extremely discouraging and frankly humiliating. Luxury is not defined by price. It is defined by culture, respect, and the way people are treated. A brand like Patek Philippe often speaks about watches being passed from generation to generation. Ironically, when a young person actually tries to begin that journey, she is told there is no way to even start. A 22-year-old who genuinely admires a brand today could easily become a loyal client for the next 50 years. Turning such people away without explanation is not only disappointing, it shows a profound misunderstanding of what long-term client relationships actually mean. I sincerely hope both Gassan management and Patek Philippe headquarters reflect on how future clients are welcomed in Amsterdam. Because if this experience represents the culture of this boutique, it is very far from the spirit that made Patek Philippe so respected in the first place.
